There are also differences between races regarding body type and disease prevalence. ​This doesn’t mean you should stop measuring BMI altogether. We’re living in an era without advanced diagnostic tools. BMI left a great legacy by bringing obesity to the forefront of national public health policy. It still holds value as a primary and simple screening tool.

​To compensate for the shortcomings of BMI, you can use WHR (Waist-Hip Ratio). This is calculated by dividing your waistline by your hip measurement. The higher this ratio, the higher the chance of having cardiovascular disease. In other words, if your waist is significantly larger than your hips, your abdominal obesity is more severe, increasing the risk of metabolic syndrome and heart disease. It is a measurement tool widely recognized in the medical community.

Generally:

​Men: Abdominal obesity is diagnosed at a WHR of 0.9 or higher.

Women: Abdominal obesity is diagnosed at a WHR of 0.85 or higher.
